Tonight, determined not to sink into the couch with a deep bowl of carbohydrates, I chop a zucchini, shiitakes, scallions, chilies, a few stems of spinach, and some tofu, with a plan to eat them as a soup over half a serving of udon. Once it’s all simmering in the pot, though, I can’t figure out how to make the broth taste the way it does when Rich makes it. I add more soy sauce, sesame oil, fish oil, but the flavor never materializes.

“I’m eating bad soups over here,” I tell him later, lying in bed with the kitchen light on. “You’d better come home right away.”

“I’ll be home before you can even miss me,” he says.

“It’s too late for that.”

BRIDGET CALLS ME at the office almost every morning now, for a quick wedding debriefing. They’re efficient calls and we stay on topic, which I’ve come to see is part of their appeal; our energies are reined in, focused together on the same thing, which there has rarely ever been a need for. She calls with a list of questions, and I’ll have a question or two for her waiting in the margin of my planner. “Do I want the glass votive holders on sale at the dollar store? Do I want the glass carafes at Walmart? The vases at Target? Do I have ribbon? Do I need poster board? Do I want her to visit the restaurant where we might hold the rehearsal dinner? It’s the most we’ve ever spoken as adults, and even while it’s going on I know I’m going to miss it once it’s over.
